FIRST AID PROVIDERS/ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION
OSBIE's comprehensive liability policy provides protection to teachers, staff and volunteers in the event injuries are caused to others through their negligence while administering First Aid or prescribed medications.
The policy provides protection to teachers, staff and volunteers in the event injuries are caused to others through their negligence.
Teachers, staff or volunteers who provide First Aid to staff, students or others are deemed to be carrying out these duties on behalf of the board.
Similarly, teachers, staff or volunteers who administer medications to students, at the request of parents and doctors are deemed to be carrying out these duties on behalf of the board.
Risk Management Tip
It is an excellent risk management strategy for schools to have trained First Aiders on staff. It is recommended that trained First Aiders be present at sporting events where there is an inherent risk of injury arising from normal play.
Administration of medications should be done in accordance with board procedures. Procedures should include obtaining signed request forms from parents, instructions regarding dosage from parents or doctor, logging of the medications themselves and dosages given, and storage of medications in a locked central location.
Please note that in accordance with Bill 20, Ryan’s Law (Ensuring Asthma Friendly Schools) passed in 2015, school principals must allow a pupil to carry his or her own asthma medication if the pupil has his or her parent’s or guardian’s permission.
